Teeth sensitivity or dental hypersensitivity is a common dental problem in which the inner part of the tooth known as dentin becomes exposed and when comes in contact with any stimuli such as cold, hot or sweet, it causes discomfort known as sensitivity. It usually occurs over-time and is caused due to common problems like receding gums, enamel wear, and bone-loss in between of teeth.
Few common ways are-
Using de-sensitizing toothpaste.
Using brush having a soft bristle.
Daily use of a fluoridated mouthwash.
Avoid food of high acidic content
Avoid teeth grinding or consider getting a mouth guard.
Get your teeth scaling done twice a year to avoid any type of gum problems that may lead to sensitivity.
It is very necessary to take precautionary steps to avoid having a problem of sensitivity. But once it starts to happen there are few dental treatments that can help you in making it better.
Fluoride gel or varnish- it is applied on the tooth surface to prevent any decay that might cause sensitivity.
Desensitizer application
Surgical gum graft- if the gum tissues have been eroded from the root portion, a graft can be placed to protect root and reduce the sensitivity.
Bonding , crowns & inlays – it is applied to the affected tooth surface to reduce the sensitivity.
Root canal treatment- it the last treatment that can be done for sensitivity when all other treatments were not helpful.
There are various factors that can trigger sensitivity such as
Cold food or beverages
Hot food or beverages
Excessive sugary food
Sour food
Breathing in cold air
Brushing teeth too vigorously
The speed of relief will vary from person to person depending upon the level of sensitivity. But with a regular use of de-sensitizing toothpaste or other treatments like fluoride gel etc it will take 7-10 days to experience relief from it.
