Gum surgery also known as periodontal surgery is done to improve the health of your gums and bone around the tooth.

Why is gum surgery required?

Gum surgery is generally performed to re-generate the lost bone structure and to help create an environment around teeth and gums that keeps it clean and helps in maintaining them. So, it is an overall strategy to prevent the loss of teeth due to gums problem.

How will I know that I need a gum surgery?

There will be few signs and symptoms in your mouth that will give you clear indications that you might need a perio treatment. Some of them are-

  • Your gums will appear to be receding from the tooth.

  • You will have a persistent bad smell/breathe.

  • Loosening of teeth.

  • Pus formation around the teeth.

With these sighs present you will need to see a periodontist as soon as possible.

How long do the gums take to heal after the surgery?

Usually there is a recovery period of at least 1 week after the gum surgeries. You will a follow up appointment with your periodontist for them to make sure that healing is proper and bone grafts are successful.

What precautions are needed after gum surgery is done?

You are strictly asked to follow whatever advises the periodontist gives you after your gum surgery. This will help in speedy recovery.

  • Avoid stressful physical activity, rest at home and take it easy on the day of surgery.

  • Use ice on the operated area.

  • Eat soft food for few days until the sutures are placed or the operated area is starting to heal.

  • Always keep your mouth clean.

  • Brush very carefully.

  • Take your medicine as prescribed by your dentist.

  • Take vitamins, it will help in healing process.
